As FPAs become larger (multi-megapixel class devices) and system requirements continue to require faster frame rates (into the kilohertz range), the amount of data produced by imaging systems is becoming very difficult to handle. The sheer volume of digital data swamps available data transmission systems and digital data storage becomes a primary limiting factor in systems where the sensor must be flown or otherwise separated from data collection or point-of-use systems.

Nova Sensors has used the biological example of human vision as a means to develop a variety of imaging products that use available image data in an intelligent manner. “Foveating” image sensors provide high spatial resolution image data where required in the field of view and permit regions of lower importance to be reduced in spatial resolution. This permits low-bandwidth/high frame rate performance over a wide field of view. |
